  3. Thank you for giving StartGen, the Internet start page generator, a try.

  26. BENEFITS
  27. StartGen optimizes some frequently performed procedures when working on the
  28. Internet, such as going to search pages to begin a search. By taking control
  29. of your start page, you add structure to the Internet experience and this
  30. helps minimize the number of decisions you must make each time you log on.
  31. Some bookmarks are used far more often than others, and StartGen allows you
  32. to place these in a place you can get to any time just by clicking your
  33. browsers' Home button. The bookmark summary feature also allows you to
  34. place a table of contents type summary at the beginning of your bookmark
  35. file which you can link to your start page for quick access.
  36.  
  37. A sample startpage can be viewed by pointing your browser to startgen.htm
  38. located in the directory you installed StartPage. The top part of the start
  39. page contains frequently used bookmarks organized by Category and Subject.
  40. The Step By Step portion of this article gives you instructions on how to
  41. customize these selections. Just beneath the bottom of this table is a
  42. "Start Page Help" button that takes you a mirror image of your start page
  43. that is linked to descriptions each item. Hit the Back button to return
  44. to your start page and select the "Bookmarks" link to see a sample
  45. bookmark summary generated by StartGen.

  47. Shareware gives you a chance to try software before buying it. If you try
  48. a Shareware program and continue to use it, you are required to register it.
  49. You can do by completing the sending $19 as explained in the registration
  50. file (register.htm). Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and retail

  96. Use of this software is permitted only to the extent reasonably required

  105. INSTALLING STARTGEN
  106. StartGen will run on any version of Windows, with the possible exception
  107. of Windows 3.0. After downloading the sgen10.exe file, run it from within
  108. Windows and it will guide you through the installation process. Click on
  109. the StartGen icon to begin using the software.
  110.  
  111. STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
  112. 1. After installing, double Click the StartGen icon to launch the program.
  113. 2. Click the "Show Bookmarks" button to display the bookmarks section.
  114. 3. Click the Import Bookmarks button.
  115. 4. Point to your Netscape bookmark file (such as c:\netscape\bookmark.htm)
  116. and select OK.
  117. 5. Your bookmarks will then be loaded into the bookmark listbox. Note that
  118. actual bookmarks are indented slightly whereas folder names in your bookmark
  119. file are not.
  120. 6. Double-click one of the bookmarks to add it to the currently selected
  121. Category and Subject.
  122. 7. When the "Add Item" dialog appears, you may want to change the Item
  123. field to a shorter description to avoid cluttering up your start page.
  124. Click the OK button to finish adding the item. Note that the "*" next
  125. to the item you just added indicates that it is selected. You may unselect
  126. an item at any time by doubleclicking it.
  127. 8. Select the Generate button and enter and assign a name to your start
  128. page file to be generated.
  129. 9. Start your browser and open the generated start page. You should see
  130. the item you added in steps 6 and 7.
  131. 10. Here's how to make this your new start page (the page that loads
  132. automatically each time you start your browser or whenever you click the
  133. "Home" button.:
  134.  
  135.   * With Netscape, you specify your homepage using the "Appearance" tab from
  136.   the dialog that appears when you select the "Options / General Preferences"
  137.   menu options.
  138.  
  139.   * Using IE, select the "Navigation" tab from the dialog that appears when
  140.     you select the "View Options" menu options.
  141.  
  142. 11. Notice the "Start Page Help" link that appears below the main table.
  143. This takes you to a mirror of your start page, except that clicking on
  144. an item takes you to a description of that item, rather than to the link
  145. site itself. As you transfer more and more of your abbreviations into
  146. long term memory (where your phone# is stored), you will probably use
  147. this help feature less and less.

  149. CHANGING THE ORDER OF CATEGORIES, SUBJECTS, AND ITEMS
  150. Position the mouse pointer over the category, subject, or item you want to
  151. move. Click the left mouse button and hold it down as you drag it in the
  152. direction you want to move it. Release the mouse button when the mouse
  153. pointer is positioned to where you want to move it.
  154.  
  155. To move move a subject to a different category, select the subject by
  156. clicking it once with the mouse and select the Edit button above the
  157. Subjects list. Change the Category in the combo box at the top of the
  158. dialog box and select the OK button to save the changes.
  159.  
  160. To move move an item to a different subject, select the item by clicking
  161. it once with the mouse and select the Edit button above the Items list.
  162. Change the Subject in the combo box near the top of the dialog box and
  163. select the OK button to save the changes.

  165. GENERATING A BOOKMARK SUMMARY
  166. Return to StartGen, select the "Tools" menu option, and the "Summarize
  167. Bookmarks" submenu option. Fill in the selections, and click
  168. "Save Changes and Close". It is recommended that you check the box at
  169. the bottom of the form to have your bookmark summary updated each time
  170. you generate your start page. Optionally, the "Summarize Now" button
  171. can be used to create a bookmark summary at any time.

  173. ADDING A NEW SEARCH ENGINE INTERFACE
  174. Select the Interfaces button from the toolbar, or select the "View" and
  175. "Search Engine Interfaces" menu options. To add a new search engine
  176. interface, include everything between the FORM and /FORM tags and you
  177. should be ok. Study the html for the search engine interfaces that shipped
  178. with StartGen for more information.

  184. DISTRIBUTING
  185. You are encouraged to pass a copy of the shareware version of StartGen along
  186. to your friends for evaluation. If you do so, you must provide them with the
  187. entire set of StartGen shareware version files.

  189. PURCHASING THE LICENSED VERSION 
  190. You may use the shareware version of StartGen for a 30 day trial period. If
  191. you would like to continue to use StartGen after the 30 day trial period,
  192. you are required to purchase the licensed version. The order form is located
  193. in order.htm.
